LAND USE AND LAND COVER CHANGES, A CASE STUDY FROM NORTHWESTERN UPLANDS OF CAMBODIA

Conclusion

The process of LULC changes could be categorized into 3 consecutive events:

  1. Civil war and peace establishment.

  2. In-migration for land access.

  3. Turmoil of smallholder farming.

LULC changes have started after the peace establishment for the KR integration, in which there was an immense flow of in-migrants to appropriate the forest lands. The high profitability of annual upland crops has been decreasing after a short period due to soil depletion and changes of climate leading smallholders into turmoil while the wealthy farmers are shifting to fruit trees to cope with these constraints.
